Volvo Group has recently collaborated with steelmaker SSAB to
become the first in the world to incorporate near zero emission steel in its
production process. Near zero emission steel, as defined by the First Movers
Coalition and the International Energy Agency, is made from fully recycled steel,
and is referred to as 'scrap-based'. This collaboration with SSAB will
complement Volvo Group's existing use of fossil-free steel, and further
strengthen its commitment to net-zero transport solutions by incorporating an
additional high-quality steel blend into its portfolio. More information
regarding this partnership will be announced in the upcoming weeks.
SSAB Zero™: The New Revolutionary Zero-Emission Steel Made
from Recycled Steel
SSAB, the renowned steelmaker, has taken a giant step towards
zero-emission steel production with the launch of its latest product: SSAB
Zero™. This is a fossil carbon emission-free steel made from recycled steel and
produced using fossil-free energy, without carbon emission offsetting and mass
balancing allocation of emission reductions. It is the first commercial steel
of its kind and will be available in Q2 2023.
SSAB's mission is to provide a comprehensive offering of
zero-emission steel, regardless of the raw material used. Volvo Group, the
world's leading truck manufacturer, has already signed a delivery agreement
with SSAB Zero™. "We are proud to already today be able to strengthen our
portfolio with SSAB Zero™, as we see increasing customer demand for steels with
low emissions," said Martin Lindqvist, SSAB’s president and CEO. "By
further enhancing steelmaking processes, we will provide a comprehensive
offering with zero emissions while reducing the impact on the planet. It is
particularly pleasing that we have been able to sign an agreement for SSAB
Zero™ with Volvo Group already at launch."
The new steel product is a significant step towards a more
sustainable future for the steel industry. SSAB aims to deliver 40,000 tonnes
of SSAB Zero™ to the market in 2023, ramping up to around 100,000 tonnes in
2025. SSAB Zero™ has zero fossil carbon emissions in operations, including
purchased energy and transportation. Only recycled steel is used as a raw
material, which means that SSAB Zero™ supports the circular economy.
SSAB has already made significant strides in reducing carbon
emissions by delivering the world's first fossil-free steel plates to Volvo
Group in 2021 and 500 tonnes of fossil-free steel to strategic customers in
2022. SSAB's leadership position in the green transition in the steel industry
has been further consolidated with this latest product launch.
SSAB Zero™ is set to revolutionize the steel industry, and it
is a step towards fully climate-neutral transport solutions. It is an encouraging
development in the quest for low-carbon solutions, and its partnership with
Volvo Group is accelerating the ramp-up towards this goal.
